Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Carolina House.
I know that making a decision to enter into a program is a hard one; especially when it means time away from family and friends. Most people who come to Carolina House for residential care are in a position of choosing the program that is the best fit for them. They are typically looking for specific things that they hope to get out of treatment.
I feel very blessed to be able to work in a program where we have the benefits of both the beauty of rural North Carolina and the sophistication of the strong education community in this area. I am very proud of our program and staff. It is important to me to provide a safe and healing atmosphere where people can do the work necessary to start their recovery process. I think you will feel this when you visit our house in rural Durham or our outpatient program in Raleigh. We have put great effort into maintaining the sense of home and connection to nature.
In terms of our therapeutic style, we have tried to create a schedule that is both robust in terms of clinical material, but also one that allows for time to breathe and practice new skills. We have incorporated components from different models in an effort to provide intellectual stimulation, but also to reach the heart and senses. The core treatment style is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) based with elements of sensorimotor, creative expression, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
We have also tried to provide a variety of ways for family to be involved in treatment. This includes family therapy, weekly family support group, and family day. Family Day is a day dedicated to bringing family members in to teach them more about what recovery looks like for different people and to help teach them best ways to help during this process. This is also a time to make sure family members are attending to their own health and welfare.
For those who do not need a residential level of care, we offer a variety of options including weekly free support group open to the public, Partial Day Treatment in both Durham and Raleigh, Intensive Outpatient Therapy, and individual group and supervised meal options.
I made the decision to transfer to NC and work at Carolina House in 2012. At the time, I ran a strong private practice in Atlanta. Yet, I fell in love with Carolina House and the staff immediately when I came to visit. I found the idea of working in this beautiful environment with a staff committed to healing very appealing. I’ve never once regretted this decision. So, I feel very comfortable recommending Carolina House to you.
I hope this information is helpful to you as you explore your options.
